Injectables

Loss of volume is a common concern for many patients, and is one of the most prominent signs of aging. Injectables are able to replace the lost volume and help to smooth out wrinkles, plump the lips, and help to restore a more youthful appearance.

Here at Studio-7-Aesthetics we offer a variety of options when it comes to your treatment. These include the Juvederm family of fillers for lip, cheek, chin, and jaw line augmentation, wrinkle treatments and scar reduction. You can speak with your provider during your consultation on what injectable will benefit you the most and will help to achieve your goals.

During your consultation, we will evaluate the areas that you are concerned about and review your medical history. We want to make sure that the treatment is safe and you will be happy with the results you receive.

Depending on the area that is being treated, you may experience results immediately. Some patients may have mild bruising or swelling; however this will be temporary and will subside over a few days. There is no downtime with injectables, so you will be able to go back to your regular routine right after treatment. The results are also not permanent. You will want to continue to receive treatment every 6-12 months.

Dermal Fillers

What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable gel-like substances used to treat a wide range of cosmetic issues in the face and hands, including diminished volume, fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. Several different companies make fillers, and each has its own unique formulations, which are useful for treating distinct problems in separate areas of the face.

By filling in certain areas of the face, we can contour and create the visage you’ve always dreamed of. Over time, dermal fillers are slowly absorbed by the body and most last anywhere from 12 to 24 months before necessitating a touch-up.

Fillers vs. Botox
Dermal fillers and botox are both minimally invasive, injectable cosmetic treatments. Both are performed as outpatient procedures in the comfort of your doctor’s office and require minimal downtime. While both can improve the overall appearance of the face, they achieve this in different ways.

Botox is primarily used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. It is a purified form of the botulinum toxin, but is a safe, FDA approved treatment that has been used for several decades now.

Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles that cause fine lines around the eyes, forehead, and mouth, also known as expression lines. By blocking the nerve signals, muscles in the injection site become temporarily paralyzed, thus softening or eliminating wrinkles from the area. These results can last up to three months, and the treatment takes about five minutes to complete.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are primarily used to rejuvenate the skin and add volume and fullness to various areas of the face. Different brands and types of fillers are made of varying ingredients, including:

  • Hyaluronic acid, such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Belotero®
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite, such as RADIESSE®
  • Poly-L-lactic acid, such as Sculptra®
  • Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA), such as Bellafill®

Each of these fillers is designed to treat certain kinds of aging or other cosmetic issues. Depending on which one is used, they can last anywhere from 12 to 24 months. On average, treatment takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

Trigger Point Injections

A trigger point is the hypersensitive spots in muscle tissue that develop as a result of overuse or misuse of muscles. Trigger points are actually palpable nodules located in deep muscle fibers. Trigger point therapy is designed to relieve pain and stiffness by applying controlled pressure directly to the trigger point. Patients that have easily identifiable trigger points, permanently contracted muscles, or headaches that are associated with muscle spasms are very good candidates for Botulinum Toxin A injections. During the procedure, the patient participates by identifying areas of pain and relief, and by breathing deep, controlled breaths to facilitate relaxation. Trigger points affect not only the local regions, but muscles at some distance from the site. Regions away from the trigger point that respond to manipulation of the point itself are known as areas of referred pain. Scientific maps have been created to identify which specific trigger points cause responses in which other parts of the body.

Botox mixed with lidocaine is inserted directly to the trigger point. After 2 weeks, this loosens the knot in the muscle, supplying relief. More frequently, patients feel positive effects from trigger point therapy after several regularly scheduled visits. The most effective results usually come from a combination of treatments, including some or all of the following: manual adjustments, Botox injections, massage, heat therapy, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. Recovery from an injury is generally shortened by trigger point therapy. Compression of a trigger point may provoke a response of local tenderness, referred pain, sometimes accompanied by muscle twitch, or motor dysfunction, but this is diagnostic and temporary.

Trigger points generally develop due to muscle overload which may result from injury, muscular atrophy due to illness, or excessive exercise. The precipitating cause of trigger point development is usually ischemia, or blood loss. The nodules that appear in the deep muscle tissue are considered to be small knots of spasmodic muscle contraction.

Trigger point therapy should not be painful, though it is likely to be somewhat more uncomfortable than a typical massage. Patients are advised to speak up if the pressure causes real pain, since it is important for the therapist to receive ongoing feedback. In most cases, the discomfort experienced is described by patients as “good pain” since it is followed immediately by relaxation of muscle tension in the problem area. Trigger point therapy is designed not for general relaxation, but to target a particular region It may be used to relieve pain or increase range of motion due to:

  • Headaches
  • Whiplash, falls, sports injury
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia

Many patients are sore in the day or two following a trigger point treatment. This is normal and expected, like the discomfort after a strenuous physical workout. Increased hydration is recommended after trigger point therapy to shorten recovery time.
